The Ouro Preto Station Children’s and Youth’s Library was inaugurated on July 3, as a new reading and knowledge space destined to serve the whole community.

The Ouro Preto Station Library is an expansion of Mariana’s Library, which, currently, holds nearly 4300 titles besides periodicals and videos about natural and cultural heritage. The new library’s users will be able to access all titles from Mariana’s archive as well as 650 books that will be donated by the Ministry of Culture in the form of the Pontos de Leitura Award - Machado de Assis Edition, in recognition of the Trem da Vale Program’s Children’s and Youth’s Library actions.

The library was inaugurated by Mr. Elias da Silva, Operation Manager of Fábrica Nova Plant, together with Ms. Emília Paiva, Executive Submanager of the Trem da Vale Patrimonial Educational Program and the event was witnessed by students, educators and residents from Ouro Preto.

Students and teachers from Hélio Homem de Faria Municipal School also attended the inauguration of this space, which will work as a tool for teaching and encouraging reading.

Popular folk dancing groups such as Ouro Preto das Cirandas and Boi de Minas, respectively from the communities of Padre Faria and Alto da Cruz, cheered up the inauguration with music and folk dances.

Ouro Preto Community members will be able to access the new library’s archive and, upon submittal of a 3 x 4 cm photograph, ID card and updated proof of residence, they can apply for the book borrowing library card.

Library hours will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesdays through Sundays, and national holidays.
