In recognition of its endeavor in preserving and furthering the cultural heritage of Ouro Preto and Mariana, the Trem da Vale Patrimonial Education Program was awarded several prizes reflecting the real importance of the Program’s actions on behalf of both local communities and visitors.

Pontos de Leitura Award – Machado de Assis Edition

The Mariana Station Children’s and Youth’s Library was one of the initiatives selected in the first edition of the Pontos de Leitura Contest – Machado de Assis Edition, sponsored by the Ministry of Culture in 2008. The contest was aimed at rewarding actions that democratize the access to books and encourage the practice of reading. As a reward for being selected, the Mariana Station Children’s and Youth’s Library will be given a kit consisting of 500 books – 50% of which being fiction works, 25% non-fiction, and 25% reference material – plus a computer, a printer as well as basic furnishings.

Rodrigo de Melo Franco Award – 2007

The Trem da Vale Program was awarded the Rodrigo de Melo Franco Award’s Honorable Mention by the National Institute for Historic and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN) in recognition of the Program’s actions aimed at protecting, preserving and disclosing the Brazilian cultural heritage. The purpose of the award is to encourage and value all those engaged in preserving the Brazilian cultural heritage. The prize comprises a certificate together with a trophy and R$ 20,000 cash.

ABERJE (Brazilian Association of Corporate Communication) Award – 2007

The Trem da Vale Patrimonial Education Program was awarded the ABERJE’s 2007 33rd prize edition. Competing with several other projects from all over the country, the program was awarded the Historical Responsibility and Corporate History prize category. The award is given in recognition of the excellence of the program’s organizational communication in preserving, valuing and furthering actions related to the history of the communities within which Vale operates.

Cultura Viva Award – 2007

By virtue of the features and uniqueness of its work in the field of verbal history, Vale Registrar was selected as one of the five finalists of the Cultura Viva Award, granted by the Ministry of Culture. The prize is awarded to entities engaged in cultural and educational practices comprising the fields of arts, cultural heritage and cultural communication developed within the communities and with their full participation.
