However, considering the obstacles imposed by the conditions of the land and the topography of the region, several years of waiting and prodigious works of engineering were necessary for the railway to reach Ouro Preto and Mariana.

The construction of Ouro Preto’s railway, which began in 1883, followed by its extension to Mariana, concluded only in 1914, alike the history of the entire 19th century, is an important chapter of the overall progress of both cities.

By the end of the 19th century, with the advent of the railway, a new course for the economic development in the region was outlined, as much in terms of industrialization as in the ability to take advantage of its mineral wealth, which was an old “Mineiros” dream, who could no longer count on gold.

The Program’s activities are developed in these spaces, especially those located at Ouro Preto and Mariana railway stations.

Railway Cars

Consisting of one steam locomotive, one diesel locomotive, and five passenger cars, the train is capable of carrying 360 people per trip.

Among the passenger cars – which retain the same design of the original trains, with wooden interiors – the panoramic car is especially outstanding by virtue of its transparent structure, which allows for a complete view of the passing scenery.
